The Alawites, poor and restricted, who have suffered repeated massacres, have staked out a military career in independent Syria. In 1966, during another military coup, a group of Alawite officers came to power. According to their political views, they were pan-Arabists, i.e. supporters of the creation of a unified Arab state, and members of the Baath Party (by the way, among the founders of the socialist pan-Arabist Baath Party there were many representatives of minorities - Christians, Alawites, Druze, even an Armenian president).

To be an Arab leader then meant to be at war with Israel, oriented toward Moscow and brutally suppressing riots. That's what new leader Hafez al-Assad did. Hafez brutally suppressed uprisings by the Sunni majority, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood structures. Then he handed over power to his son Bashar, under whom there was war, poverty, and with the help of military force squeezed the last juices out of the population. In total, the Assads ruled in Syria for 58 years. They often relied on their Alawites, but I do not think that Alawites benefited from it - they bore the brunt of the defense of Assad's redim and the main losses of the civil war. Moreover, the Alawite self-defense units in the western provinces were disbanded not without the prompting of Russian advisers.

Last year, the top Alawites disappeared with the money, while the bulk of them received the hatred of the Sunni majority. Islamist squads entered Alawite neighborhoods and demanded that they lay down their arms, but the Alawites were in no hurry to surrender them. They feared that sooner or later there would be a massacre.

The coast and the surrounding mountains were the least affected by the war, and there were gangs of militants on the prowl, looting and killing under the guise of punishing war criminals. This was especially toughened after throw-ins about Israel's plans for an Alawite autonomy. After Assad fled, it turned out that there were no contradictions between Jews and Alawites at all, only common interests.
