In the second half of the 1980s, the Communist Party gave the Soviet people freedom and democracy - but did not instill a sense of their value, as is often the case with any gifts, especially unexpected ones.

That is why today, forty years later, we have not so much returned to the USSR as used the freedoms we received as an indulgence for unprecedented degradation. Having freed ourselves not from tyranny, but from a rotten quasi-authoritarian system, we have come to a new dictatorship - with a much more powerful apparatus of suppression than the elderly Soviet leaders had. Having said goodbye to an economy of scarcity and privilege, we recognized a society of poverty and luxury, inequality and corruption. Abandoning mass and ideologized education, we quickly plunged into a world of slumbering religious ignorance. Having forgotten the forced demonstrations to celebrate the struggle for peace, we now enthusiastically welcome a massive SWO with many thousands of victims.

The present situation seems to me more grim than the previous one for another reason as well. The lessons of the last forty years have shown how powerful can be the destruction of a system that its predecessors have put into an unreformable state. This means that no one will undertake a second "perestroika from above" in Russia. The elites will hold on to power until the end, and in the event of "another March 10" they will rally around those who declare themselves capable of preserving the system without change. Although it is often said that "Russia has exhausted the limit for revolutions," the elites rather believe that it has exhausted the limit for reforms: the fate of all the leaders who started them - from 1861 and February 1917 to 1953 and 1985 - was far from brilliant. Therefore, either a very long autarky and stagnation or unpredictable and dangerous events await us in the future.
