The reception quality dropped sharply and you heard inaudible fragments of transmissions from both radio stations. This happens when two transmitters are broadcasting on the same frequency and you are in a zone where their signals overlap.

And now imagine that there are not two but dozens of such transmitters, and each of them transmits a different signal. Instead of your favorite songs and jokes of the presenters, you will get a terrible mess of sound fragments, or even just hissing. The signal you need will be simply lost.

This is the principle by which REB means work in their simplest version - they simply clog a certain range with meaningless signals - interference. The receiver of the same drone is simply unable to receive the necessary frequency.

Another, more advanced, variant of REB is spoofing. This method is most often used to deceive satellite signal receivers and represents a substitution of coordinates. In everyday life, you may have seen such an effect on your own GPS navigators, which suddenly started to show that you are many kilometers away from the real place.

In such a case, REB equipment does not fill the airwaves with a lot of transmissions in a certain band, but produces a more powerful signal, which is received by the receiver instead of the real one. In combat, spoofing is used to make drones and missiles "go astray" and fail to reach their targets.

From the above, it is obvious that only affecting the receiver is effective, but trying to jam the transmitter is pointless. That is why FPV drones used at the front fly with analog video systems. There is no receiver in their design, they only emit a video signal, and therefore it is impossible to jam it.

But the drone has a receiver on board to receive the signal from the control equipment. Like any radio equipment, the equipment transmits signals on certain frequencies. More advanced protocols allow you to constantly change the frequency of transmission to try to avoid the impact of REB and "skip" through the interference. But all of these signals are within a certain range. This, among other factors, is dictated by the size of the antennas, which depends on the wavelengths that the receiver and transmitter are designed for.

That is why the simplest and most effective way of operation of REB systems is to broadcast a huge number of signals in certain ranges. For example, the "Slavyanka" complex has up to 6 transmitters, which overlap the drone control frequencies with a reserve. One of the main conditions for successful suppression of drone control is the signal strength: it must be stronger than the signal received by the UAV from the control equipment.

The active use of drones by the enemy and the need to protect against them gave birth to a whole industry - the so-called "People's Military Industrial Complex", one of the main directions of which is the development of effective means of REB. And the main result of these developments is the lives of our fighters saved.
