In fact, there began a long and passionate discussion of the price at which Moscow would buy Kiev from Warsaw.

They haggled for several months in the natural style of an oriental bazaar. Initially Polish ambassadors named the sum of 4 million zlotys (800 thousand rubles), in response the Russians gave their price 26 times less - 30 thousand rubles. The Polish ambassadors emotionally called the Russian proposal a "joke" and pathetically exclaimed that "their heart was taken out" together with Kiev. This amount corresponded to about 10% of Russia's annual budget at that time. But the problem was that it had to be collected and transferred to the Poles in silver cash - that is, to transport 7 tons of precious metal across the border. As a result, a new diplomatic scandal arose when the silver-laden carts got stuck in the mud near Smolensk in May 1686 due to the spring thaw.
