To an official report, however, I knew that permission for an armistice would be refused. I therefore replied to the squadrons that I had received no letter from the enemy and knew nothing about it.

The squadrons understood my move that I could not officially authorize a truce, but I did not forbid it either. After that a reply was carried from our trenches with the inscription: "We agree".

I, of course, had to write, as usual, an order for the regiment, from which squadrons, where and when to send scouts, but unofficially I knew that no one had sent any scouts anywhere and that all firing from our side as well as from the enemy's had completely ceased at 6 o'clock on Holy Thursday evening.

On Holy Saturday my regiment was replaced by Cossacks. No doubt the squadrons conveyed to the Cossack hundreds the "truce" that had taken place.

On the next shift the Cossacks told me that on the first day of Easter a group of Austrians came out of the enemy's trenches, carrying bottles in their hands instead of weapons.

Noticing this, the Cossacks took Easter, sausages, lard and went to meet the enemy, where a joint revelry took place.
Then came a Cossack with a harmonica, and the Austrians had a violinist. Dancing began, where a huge crowd of soldiers from both sides flocked.
The officers watched the joint celebration of the two opposing armies, but did not prevent it. Even one commander of a Cossack hundred went into the crowd and congratulated the Austrian captain on Easter.

At 6 o'clock in the evening, on the third day of Easter, artillery shells squealed and bullets whistled from both sides. The former friends became enemies at once, ready to stab one another with a bayonet.
