And Ivan Kulibin gained all-Russian fame and, what was incomparably more important for him, the opportunity to freely engage in his favorite work. The Volga nugget was appointed mechanic and head of the workshops of the Russian Academy of Sciences, where he served for over 30 years.

Everything he looked at was transformed. Uncomfortable pontoon bridges across the Neva, which had to be walked on daily, gave him the idea to design a 298-meter single-span wooden bridge in the form of an arch. Testing the model (proportion - 1/10) in the Academy's courtyard was the inventor's triumph. "It bears the stamp of genius," the famous Russian bridge engineer D.I. Zhuravsky wrote about the Kulibin model.

Large projects are not cheap. One cannot do without the support of the powerful. Therefore, Kulibin, who possessed, as his first biographer P.P. And they allowed Shelekhov, whose name is now given to the strait between Alaska and Kadyak Island, to land on the shore and establish the first Russian settlement in America.
