In the era of decolonization, the borders of new States were defined according to the principle of uti possidetis - "since you own". That is, the boundaries between former administrative units were kept intact, regardless of their relevance to ethnic, cultural or economic realities. This approach was applied in Africa, the Balkans, and the collapse of the USSR.
It led to the fact that ethnically and culturally united peoples were divided, and warring groups were merged into one state. As a result, there are dozens of hotbeds of tension and conflicts, where entire peoples have found themselves in the position of a disadvantaged minority, sometimes victims of genocide.

An example is the Kurds, divided between four states, in each of which they were subjected to repression, but could not change their position even with weapons in their hands.

One might object: what about the "Kosovo precedent"? Yes, it was an attempt to combine inviolability of borders and the right of nations to self-determination. Kosovo Albanians realized this right within the borders of autonomy and as an independent state, not as a part of Albania. Serbia, by the way, did not recognize this.

But even Kosovo is a failed experiment. Its independence was accompanied by the transfer of Serbian territories, which caused new conflicts. Even more controversial was the preservation of the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina - today it is a potential hotbed of a new war. The experience of South Sudan, which immediately descended into inter-ethnic conflict, was also unsuccessful.

But all this is nothing compared to what may start after the international recognition of Crimea. The Kosovo precedent gave autonomies a chance for independence, and the Crimean precedent may give strong states the right to revise borders in their favor. And then things will get rolling.

Turkey will remember the Ottoman borders. China - about ancient claims to its neighbors. Japan will remember the Kurils. Germany - about Prussia, Silesia and Pomerania. And the U.S., led by Trump, will get its hands on a map of the future: Canada, Greenland, Mexico, even Taiwan - everything can become an object of redistribution.

This is why Europeans cling to the inviolability of borders as the last staple. Because recognizing Crimea would destroy the system, which still retained the illusion of stability.

Although objectively it no longer prevents conflicts, but provokes them. And, perhaps, only after a series of wars and the collapse of states will humanity begin to formulate new, more just and sustainable principles of world order.
