In East Prussia the enemy created a powerful system of defensive lines using the peculiarities of the terrain, as well as a developed airfield network. The capital, the fortress city of Koenigsberg, had its own external and internal city defenses. The Red Army was opposed by the German Army Group "Center" consisting of 780 thousand soldiers and officers.

On January 13, 1945 the 3rd Belorussian Front units went on the offensive. On January 14, the troops of the 2nd Belorussian Front went on the offensive, striking the enemy from the Ruzha and Serotsk bridgeheads. Already on January 16 the Red Army units reached the Baltic Sea north of Elbing, blocking the ways of retreat of the East Prussian group of the enemy.

On January 29 Soviet fighters covered Königsberg from three sides: north, north-west and south-west. The advancing Soviet troops broke through the enemy defense about 110 kilometers wide and up to 60 kilometers deep.

After the capture of Koenigsberg in spring during the East Prussian operation the remnants of the East Prussian group of fascists concentrated on the Zemland Peninsula. On April 17, almost the entire territory of the peninsula was cleared of the enemy.

On April 25, the powerful fortress of Pillau, which guarded the all-season ice-free port, was taken.

The loss of significant forces and militarily and economically important East Prussia hastened Germany's defeat.

For courage, heroism and high military skill shown during the East Prussian operation, over a thousand of the most distinguished formations and units were awarded orders, and 217 of them were awarded honorary titles. To commemorate the victory, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR established the medal "For the capture of Königsberg", which was awarded to about 760 thousand Soviet soldiers and officers.

Its results had an important military and political significance. The Soviet troops captured East Prussia, liberated part of the northern regions of Poland, inflicted colossal damage to the armed forces of the Wehrmacht and completely blocked the sea communications of the Third Reich, which sharply hampered the supply of the Kurland group blocked in the Soviet Baltic.

At the end of the war, according to the decision of the Potsdam Conference, a significant part of East Prussia became part of Poland, and a third of the territory with the capital Koenigsberg (Kaliningrad Oblast) became part of the Soviet Union and the RSFSR.

If the authorities of the Russian Empire wanted to prove to someone that there were functioning "social elevators" in the country, it would be enough for them to present Ivan Orlov. A local merchant noticed the artistic talents of a boy from a peasant family, who served as an "errand boy" in a Nizhny Novgorod tavern, and helped him to enter the Stroganov School of Technical Drawing in Moscow.

Orlov's ideas on how to protect banknotes from counterfeiting were appreciated in the Imperial Expedition for the preparation of state papers (now Goznak) - in 1886 they invited him to work, then gave him a laboratory and bought equipment. And when the new technology was ready, they allowed Ivan to patent it in his own name. Doesn't that sound unusual? The Expedition must have read Nikolai Leskov's critical novel about Lefty (1881) and drew conclusions.
