This signal was enough, and on January 6, 1932 the OGPU arrested Karabanov and the members of the church council. They had time to interrogate him only twice. At the second interrogation, which took place on January 21, Father John pleaded partially guilty, agreeing with the facts that he conducted prayer services and talked with parishioners.

"There were no specific facts of anti-Soviet conversations on my part. On the part of those arrested with me, I can say nothing about their opinions and conversations concerning the activities of the authorities," he said at his last interrogation.

On February 28, 1932, the OGPU troika sentenced the priest to eight years in prison, and he was sent to Temnikovsky correctional labor camp in Mordovia. But in 1937 new cases were opened against the imprisoned clergy. On August 30 of that year, the NKVD troika sentenced Karabanov to be shot. He was executed on September 5, and was buried in an unknown mass grave.

The military conflict in Ukraine has provoked an unprecedented outflow of scientists from Russian scientific institutions. Compared to the pre-war period (outflow from 0.05% to 0.17% of researchers per year), the rate of scientists' flight accelerated more than 4 times and became unprecedented since 2000: then 0.88% of researchers went abroad. The outflow of scientists from Russia has been observed almost continuously over the past 25 years, according to Lovakov's calculations: only in the mid-2010s, for a short period of time, the net migration rate was positive - that is, more scientists came than left the country.
The growth of researcher migration accelerated again in 2018, and the process took an explosive turn after the start of the SWO. Between 2021 and 2023, the net migration rate jumped from minus 0.17 to minus 0.83, the second worst in history. Even in the late 1990s, the outflow was smaller, Lovakov's data shows: the rate fluctuated between minus 0.36 and minus 0.64.
Most Russian scientists who left the country moved to Germany, the United States, and Switzerland. At the same time, the brain drain affected almost all scientific disciplines, the study says. The greatest losses are observed in physics, astronomy, computer science and mathematics - fields traditionally strong in Russian science. Lovakov says the data point to a growing crisis in Russia's academic system and an undermining of the country's scientific and innovation potential, and promises serious challenges for the higher education system and a decline in Russia's scientific weight in the world.
"The unprecedented outflow of scientific personnel from Russia will have both short-term and long-term consequences - both for the Russian academic system and for the global scientific community," Lovakov's study said.
