Iraq used surface-to-surface missiles and aircraft, targeting residential areas and economic targets such as oil refineries. Iran, despite its limited resources, responded in kind. Both sides tried to break each other psychologically with a constant sense of fear, maximize enemy civilian casualties, and destroy as much nonmilitary infrastructure as possible.

It is common to identify five phases in the "war of the cities," from 1984 to 1988, with the most devastating being the last bombardment of Iranian cities in 1988. Twenty-seven Iranian cities were bombed, and 118 missiles flew into Tehran in less than two months, leading to the exodus of a large part of the population from the Iranian capital.

In all, more than 2,300 Iranians were killed and more than 11,000 were wounded in the "war of the cities." Iraq had numerous casualties as well. However, despite the scale of destruction, the war did not lead to victory for either side. The war ended in 1988 without a clear winner, leaving behind millions of casualties and devastated economies. During the barbaric bombing of Stalingrad, the Germans dropped more than 1000 tons of high-explosive and incendiary bombs in one day on August 23, 1942, eventually destroying the city by 90%. But the war did not stop because of this.

No matter how many bombs the USSR and the Allies dropped on German factories, the Germans never stopped weapons production.

With Ukraine, the matter is complicated by the fact that Russia does not launch full-fledged strikes on the rear of Ukraine, because the main rear is the Western countries, from where the main aid to Kiev comes. Whatever strikes are carried out on Ukraine's rear, Ukraine's economic base will not be undermined. And the supply of weapons to the front will not stop.

No matter how successful the strikes on the rear are, we must not forget that victory is achieved at the front.
