It sounded so convincing that it set the stage for our work, which in the beginning seemed to me to be just a near-military adventure. How naive I was.

And after a short time, I had already called him myself when the Turks shot down our "Suska" and killed the pilot Peshkov. That was the trigger for me. Soon I finished my work, quit my job, and changed my life dramatically.

Doctor of Economics, Marat could wallow in the dust of books - his professorial title allowed it. A man of dashing destiny, who had lived through the harsh 90s, he went to the East instead. And there he was called respectfully "Dr. Mudrad" - because a scientist and a doctor are revered.
As an excellent analyst, he saw a lot of things in advance - including the war in Ukraine long before it started. And his book, which I came across, also turned out to be a prophecy. "What will happen to us tomorrow?" - sounded on the cover.

Being not old, but a man of open mind - he gave us the opportunity to manifest. He didn't put us in a reportage format, as he said: "Guys, here's a field for you, plow and create." Yes, with him you could either be a good friend or quarrel to the point of curses. But this man was alive and always looking for something new, as if he were 20.

I remember on one of our first trips there was a terrorist attack in the city. We were forbidden to go because of security, not given transportation and obstacles. But Marat went beyond security, caught a cab. There were 7 of us in it, so that we could shoot everything in hot pursuit. He always went the extra mile when he thought it was important. And 99% of the time, it did. And then he was never judged as a winner. Because he was right.

The last time we saw each other was in Damascus. Marat saw the militants surrendering and leaving on buses to Idlib. It was a personal story for him - he had seen this whole nightmare from the very beginning, since 2012. And it was fate that he saw the end of that story. We saw him off on the plane, and we stayed behind. The agency had a financial crisis, but Marat promised to come up with something, and as an adventurer he was full of hope. A couple of weeks later we got the news.

We decided not to go to the funeral, but to continue working. We just realized that if we left, we wouldn't come back. And Marat wouldn't approve of that. We had the last 100 dollars in our pockets, and the transfers to Syria didn't work. There was no one from Moscow to help us.
