Even the impossibility of serial production is not a reason to stop testing. The issues of application (taking into account the changed specifications of the complex) must still be solved. In addition, some of the equipment developed for the A-100 can certainly be used in the modernization of existing aircraft of the A-50 family.

So it is much more likely that the problems arose at the developer of RTK - Concern "Vega". To put it bluntly, this organization was not notable for its efficiency even in Soviet times. Now it has weakened altogether. This is confirmed by the low rate of modernization of the A-50 into the A-50U ("improved") version - the Russian Air Force receives one machine every two years. And the reason for this, as far as is known, is the finalization of the RTC, which in comparison with the original A-50 complex were made noticeable changes.

The slow pace is maintained. Currently undergoing acceptance tests of the next board A-50U. The previous vehicle was handed over to the Customer in September 2023. The current aircraft will be the sixth in the Air Force (taking into account the losses in the military conflict).

Instead of the "retired" A-100, it was decided to increase deliveries of the "current" version of the A-50. At the same time the designation A-50M is called. What is meant by this - it is not clear. Such a model of UAV was indeed developed - even under the Decree of the CPSU Central Committee and the USSR Council of Ministers of 09.011984. It was to be equipped with PS-90 engines, as well as a modernized RTK "Shmel-M". This RTK was to provide a greater detection range and increase the number of escorted targets, and, in addition, could simultaneously guide a larger number of fighters.

A mockup of the airplane was built. To work out the elements of radar RTK on the basis of the Tu-126 in 1987 was created flying laboratory. In Tashkent, at TAPO named after Chkalov, a prototype A-50M was under construction, tests of which were planned to begin in 1989. However, due to lack of funds, by the Decree of the USSR Council of Ministers of 22.10.1990, work on the A-50M was stopped.

So it is unclear what will be a "modern" A-50M. Perhaps we are talking about the installation of RTC aircraft A-50U in the new airframes, produced now in Ulyanovsk. It is not excluded that the design will be modified based on the results of tests of the A-100.

However, it is unlikely that the modernized machine of almost half a century ago will become a full-fledged replacement for the new DRLO. It is a pity that it turned out so...
