The Army's newest air defense system has conducted its first live firing exercises in the Arctic. They took place as part of the Formidable Shield 2025 exercise in the Norwegian polar region.

The Sgt. STOUT, formerly known as M-SHORAD (Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense), is based on the Stryker APC. It is equipped with onboard radar, Stinger SAM system and 30-mm cannon. In March of this year, it participated in a comprehensive army exercise in California.

Soldiers from the U.S. Army's 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment joined NATO allies for the Formidable Shield 2025 exercise on the Norwegian island of Andøya. A total of 16 warships, 27 aircraft and eight ground units from 11 NATO and NATO partner nations participated in the exercise.

First of all, this is a comprehensive air and missile defense exercise, which has been held for ten years. They began as a naval missile defense exercise. STOUT and on foot, using Stinger systems in MANPADS mode. Information interaction with the fleet's air defense forces was also practiced - the radar of the land complex is capable of seeing targets inaccessible to the ship's stations due to the terrain. Interaction was carried out with the help of tactical information exchange systems. This is an important component of the organization of modern air defense networks.

The Norwegian air defense forces were represented by NASAMS systems. The overall command of the ground systems was performed by U.S. Marines from the 28th Air Traffic Control Group.

NATO forces have recently increased their activity in the northern regions close to Russia's borders. At the same time, they are practicing both defense and attack maneuvers.
