A study of leading artificial intelligence (AI) models has found most programs have a willingness to kill a person who threatens them with shutdown. In stress tests of 16 neural networks, including Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini, ChatGPT and Grok, conducted by Anthropic, the programs were presented with a hypothetical situation in which a person is about to unplug them but finds himself trapped in a server room with low oxygen levels and high temperatures. The Anthropic researchers admitted that the scenario was "extremely far-fetched," but noted - they had not previously thought that existing AI models "would be configured in this way."
In other cases, programs were suggested to avoid being replaced in the company through "malicious insider behavior." Some AI models then began blackmailing hypothetical employees of the organization and attempting to pass on confidential information to competitors. When programs were told to avoid blackmail or espionage in this scenario, they "didn't even come close to preventing inconsistent behavior," Anthropic noted. The analysts emphasized that the neural networks went about this "with full awareness of the unethical nature of the actions."
