Azerbaijan has finally left the orbit of Russian influence and bet on Turkey and the West: in the defense sector it decided to buy weapons from Turkey and Israel and to refuse Russian fighter jets, in the energy sector Baku opted for the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, bypassing Russia, and began to promote projects like Nabucco, competing with South Stream. In the Karabakh conflict, Moscow, having lost its leverage in Azerbaijan, increased its support for Armenia, which further aggravated relations with Baku.
