And there is a second Serbia. I would call it the Serbia of common sense. It represents rather the older generations. It is already at the throat of these blockades of streets and railroads, which it believes are organized by those for whom it has to pay. It must be understood that the students who block traffic are also from private universities. Their parents pay for their education, even when their children are not studying but hanging around the protests. And, as a rule, these students are not from Belgrade. So the money is spent on rent and many other things.

The second Serbia, unlike the first, is willing to put up with the current state of affairs. And now these two Serbs are literally colliding in the streets.

There are no anti-Russian or pro-Russian forces in this clash. But it would be rash to assume that nothing will change for Russia with Vucic's departure. Let us recall the events of 25 years ago. On October 5, 2000, when crowds of people overthrew Milosevic, they were overwhelmingly pro-Russian - just as many (most?) of those dissatisfied with Vucic are now. However, the fruits of that revolution were used by politicians who were not pro-Russian. The same may be true now.

For Russia, Vucic is probably the least of the evils in Serbia. There are many questions about him - for example, about Serbian arms going to Ukraine, and about the threat of nationalization of the key Russian asset in Serbia - the Serbian oil industry. But at least he is understandable. Who will come after him, if and when his regime falls, remains an open question.

Unfortunately, Moscow takes a very passive position, the position of an observer. It would be possible to use humanitarian technologies of influence, to try to look for its leaders among the protesting students, as some Western centers of power are doing. But, alas, none of this is happening.

So who will win - the first Serbia or the second?

In answering this question, one must realize that Vucic has now become not a man, but a symbol for his fellow citizens. For some - corruption and a regime that must be overturned, for others - a calm and stable life. When Vucic says that the state has won the June 28 protest, he is, unfortunately, very mistaken. The state in confrontation with a disgruntled people (even a part of it) can hardly win in the conditions of today's Serbia. In the Balkans there is not and never has been, as in Russia, a sacred attitude to the institution of the state. But there was a tradition of throwing their kings off balconies by their feet, as the last king of the Obrenovic dynasty was thrown out in 1903.
