Nikolai Nikitich Nikonov was born in 1849 in the small village of Onofrevo near the town of Poshekhonye in Yaroslavl province into a family of simple peasants. However, at the age of 23 Nikonov moved from his village to St. Petersburg (how he did it - history is silent) and, apparently, caught the idea of becoming an architect.

The most surprising thing is that such a talented architect, one of the most outstanding masters of the Russian style, had no academic education. Of course, he went to the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts as a free student (he could attend classes, but was not allowed to examinations and practices), but to take it as a full-fledged education would be strange. However, it should be noted that in those times such a thing was quite possible - in this matter the main thing was not even education, but striving for the goal and innate talent of a person (a vivid example is the famous Moscow self-taught architect Fyodor Shechtel).

It was these two important traits that were inherent in Nikolai Nikitich. Being a free student at the Academy of Arts, Nikonov gained important knowledge and acquired several useful acquaintances in the field of construction. Due to this he was able to get into the assistant architect Monighetti. This experience was very important for him, because just a few years later Nikolai Nikitich was involved in a rather large construction project - he took part in the design and erection of Basin's profitable house on Ostrovsky Square, in the very center of St. Petersburg!

After that Nikonov's career skyrocketed upwards. In 1886 in St. Petersburg was built the first church on his project, and in 1893 Nikonov received the post of diocesan architect. Thus, virtually all orders for the erection of religious buildings were addressed directly to the diocesan architect without a competition. Nikolai Nikitich held this position for 13 years: from 1893 to 1906. That is, during this time Nikonov was officially recognized as the chief architect of the Russian Orthodox Church in the capital of Russia!

Nikonov's use of tiles in his church and even civil buildings is especially pleasing and inspiring. Ceramics is perfectly preserved even in such a difficult St. Petersburg climate. It imposes the imprint of some, at the same time, antiquity and cheerfulness in the monotonous and strict St. Petersburg style of buildings. The use of Mirgorod tiles is especially impressive in the Russian Embassy Holy Trinity Church built in Buenos Aires in 1898. Here Nikonov designed a whole iconostasis from them.

He was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus, 3rd degree - May 14, 1896 and the Order of St. Anna, 3rd degree - July 6, 1900 for the design and construction of a stone three-domed church in the suburb of Vazheozerskaya Zadne-Nikiforovskaya desert in St. Petersburg. From the received reward Nikonov donated most of the money in favor of the farmstead.

From the post of diocesan architect Nikolai Nikitich left at his own request: apparently, the architect wanted to move away from such an active work (diocesan architect could have several orders a year). The list of his works is striking in its scope, before the First World War he built more than five dozen Orthodox churches (unfortunately many lost after the Mamai invasion of the revolution). In the year of the October coup Nikolai Nikitich moved far away from rebellious and hungry Petrograd to provincial Samara, where he helped his son to design shopping malls. In this Volga city he died in 1918. Researchers of Nikonov's life are still unable to find records of the exact date of death and place of burial of the famous Russian architect.
