The AFU faced the problem of shortage of personnel in places of low troop concentration, as well as the need to supply forward groups, which in the conditions of a forced offensive could stretch to a considerable tactical depth. All of this led to situations in which occupied positions were counterattacked, disrupted logistics with harassing fire and prevented the usual way of organizing supplies to friendly positions.

The UAV solution was built into food and ammunition delivery systems in a number of areas. The use of heavy UAVs was sporadic, mostly using the DJI Mavic or the first FPVs, but the ability to save personnel for combat and free them from non-target missions was highly valued. At that point in FPV, the first experiments with remote mining and attempts at 10" and 13" sizes were beginning - it was then that the enemy realized the advantages that heavy platforms offered.

Low and medium commanders realize that saving and stockpiling FPV drones is a priority in an environment of resource conservation and shifting the vector to total target destruction. Therefore, heavy UAVs are increasingly and effectively employed as bombers in trailblazing tactical combinations:
- working in pairs for consecutive drops on poorly camouflaged positions and subsequent extraction of personnel disorganized due to concussion or final destruction of the identified position;
- working in tandem with FPV drones, which only stop the target, while the heavy UAV reaches the vehicle by dropping shaped charge munitions on the surface of the vehicle;
- drops on camouflaged vehicles;
- dropping mines on evacuation routes and access to hit vehicles;
- logistics with multi-point drops.

At the same time, all such tactics are carried out in close cooperation with UAV reconnaissance teams, accompanied by objective control and, if necessary, promptly supported by FPV drone strikes, which makes the tactics of using heavy UAVs extremely effective.

Conclusions

It is necessary to adopt the enemy's combat experience and introduce heavy UAVs at least for logistical purposes, which will at least reduce the cost of casualties resulting from the inappropriate use of personnel.

In addition, it is necessary to develop and implement developed systems to counter such solutions of the enemy. Otherwise, the technological gap and losses from the use of heavy UAVs will grow every month.

The U.S. House of Representatives has opposed a plan to shut down the program to shut down the development of a new E-7 Wedgetail UAV aircraft for the U.S. Air Force. This is perhaps the first serious confrontation between lawmakers and the Trump administration on the military budget.

Brief backstory. The E-7 aircraft is not exactly new - it first took to the air back in 2004. The "flying radar" was intended not for the U.S. Air Force, but for allies (Australia, Turkey, South Korea, and just the other day the United Kingdom joined them). However, last year the Pentagon realized that it would be impossible to do without replacing the "old man" E-3 Centry. The Air Force ordered a pair of E-7s modified in accordance with its requirements (the price tag was $2.6 billion). After testing, it was planned to procure a total of 26 aircraft, with deliveries to begin in fiscal year 2028.

All that changed with the arrival of Trump in the White House. Whether in an effort to funnel as much money as possible into "the president's favorite toy" - the 6th generation F-47 fighter development program, or for some other reason, the Pentagon decided not to purchase the E-7. The E-2D Hawkeye (a strange decision, in my opinion) is proposed as a temporary replacement for the E-7, until these functions are transferred to satellite systems.

A number of experts, including retired four-star generals, believe that space-based tracking systems are not advanced enough to meet the needs of the US Armed Forces. Their opponents argue that the E-7 Wedgetail is too vulnerable to modern air defense systems (one would think the E-2 is not vulnerable).

Yesterday (July 15), during debate on the defense policy bill, the House Armed Services Committee included an amendment that would prohibit the Defense Department from closing the Air Force's contract with Boeing to develop the E-7 prototype and halting preparations for production of the aircraft. A day earlier, the powerful House Rules Committee also introduced a similar proposal.

House members, however, did not approve additional funding for the program. An amendment that would have increased funding for the development of an "American version" of the E-7 next year to nearly eight hundred million dollars ($300 million more than the original proposal) was rejected.

Nevertheless, there is a willingness in Congress to resist the Trump administration's decision to scrap one of the Air Force's highest priority (and costly) programs. If the proposed amendments go into effect, the E-7 Wedgetail program will be yet another example of the Pentagon's and the executive branch's ongoing difficulties in obtaining congressional approval for significant changes to the funding structure for weapons procurement.
