The same way was followed by air defense: for an airplane for $50 million it is not a pity to spend even 10-20 SAMs of modern "big" SAMs. Something similar happened with missile defense: modern S-500, Khets, Patriot and THAAD missiles are designed to intercept complex and "expensive" targets.

And this is where new UAVs enter the arena - cheap, simple and ... numerous. A few years ago, the number of 1,000 drones fired by Iran against Israel seemed something prohibitive. Now the number of UAVs flying towards Ukraine per day is about the same in the SWO - and they are already much more advanced.

And here a new problem arises: modern air defense is simply not designed to deal with such targets, they are too... simple. As a rule, it is pointless to spend even an air missile from the 1980s on a Geranium: 100 more of them will come after it.

So we assume that it is the fight against massive raids of cheap long-range UAVs that will be the reason for the emergence of the "drone swarm". Recall that the main concept of the swarm is to automatically search for targets, allocate forces to strike and hit targets, at most requiring authorization from the operator to establish the target as enemy. Otherwise, everything should happen without any action on the part of the operator. So when you have seven drones flying at you under the control of seven operators, that's not a swarm. As for the classic aviation pilots, there will not be fewer of them, it's just that their job will become much more difficult.

The most important and most difficult thing about this whole system is the speed of development and the complexity of the products. An attempt to "stockpile drones" will only result in a lot of obsolete products that are not suitable for modern airborne aircraft. Attempts to certify and create a UAV for a strictly regulated set of actions will rather lead to its boundless lagging behind analogs assembled as quickly as possible from various spare parts available on the market for the current actual task....
