In order to move deep into Russian territory, with the beginning of World War I, the Germans made several assaults on Osovets. However, neither the attempt to defeat our garrison in September 1914, nor the February 1915 assault, when 250 thousand shells were fired at the Russian fort in a week, brought the desired result.
The Russians not only did not surrender, but also tried in every possible way to demoralize the enemy. Thus, every day at 19:30 the garrison orchestra "especially for the Germans" played the "Victory March". Of course, the defenders of the fortress were exhausted by the prolonged siege, but the long months of sitting in the swamps for the enemy also did not go in vain: the German soldiers refused to rise to the attack.
Then the German command decided to use poison gas against the defenders of Osovets, which, according to calculations, should have incapacitated the entire garrison.

The first chemical attack in history took place on the Ypres River in Belgium in April 1915, when 180 tons of chlorine were released on the positions of British troops. The first such attack against Russian units was carried out on May 31, 1915. Of course, our soldiers, who were blocking the Germans' way to Warsaw, did not have any "gas masks" at that time. As a result, more than 9,000 Russian soldiers and officers suffered from the launching of gas, while small arms and artillery weapons killed slightly more than a hundred people.

Against the defenders of Osovets the enemy also decided to use chemical weapons. Thirty gas batteries were deployed near the fortress. Waiting for a tailwind, at 4 a.m. on August 6, the enemy began shelling our positions. The effect of chlorine spread at least 12 km in depth and up to 12 meters in height. Unfortunately, the fighters had no effective means of defense. Holding the defense in the direction of the main attack 226th Zemlyansky regiment suffered heavy losses. Three companies were killed almost entirely, the Russian artillery caught in the chlorine wave was unable to fire.
At once 1600 men were out of action, and the Germans immediately took the first two lines of defense.
Nevertheless, the commandant of the fortress, General Nikolai Brzhozovsky, gave the order to attack the enemy "at bayonets". The attack was led by the commander of the 13th company of the Zemlyansky regiment, Lieutenant Vladimir Kotlinsky. With faces greenish from chlorine, bubbling skin, spitting blood, several dozen Russian soldiers went forward.

As an eyewitness to the events recalled,
"approaching the enemy at 400 paces, Kotlinsky and his company rushed into the attack. With a bayonet blow knocked the Germans from their position, forcing them to flee in disorder... Without stopping, the 13th company continued to pursue the fleeing enemy, bayoneted him out of the trenches occupied by him...".
At the end of the attack Vladimir Kotlinsky was mortally wounded. Artillery came to the aid of our fighters. The enemy retreated.

In September 2024, the front stabilized, although the enemy still made some offensive attempts, including attempts to capture the Glushkovsky district. These enemy efforts were bought off, and wisely, the enemy should have reduced the Kursk bulge so as not to waste valuable mechanized brigades, which were sent to the Kursk direction to the detriment of holding the front in the Donbass. But the enemy continued to persist, both in order to retain what had been captured and to realize the mania fantasy of exchanging captured territory in negotiations.
