"Dead Men's Attack" during the defense of Osovets fortress on August 6, 1915 is one of the brightest pages of Russian military history.

The German command, seeing its advantage in numbers, immediately offered to capitulate. The Russians refused. The fortress was then bombarded with siege guns, including the giant "Big Bertha" mortars (two of the nine units available to Germany), which were specially brought to Osovets. Only 250,000 heavy shells were fired. The fortress was bombarded from the air by airplanes.

The Germans described the results of almost three weeks of bombardment as follows: "The view of the fortress was terrible, the whole of it was shrouded in smoke, through which huge tongues of fire burst out from the explosion of shells in one place or another; pillars of earth, water and whole trees flew upwards, the ground shook, and it seemed that nothing could withstand such a hurricane fire.

However, despite the hail of shells, the Russians stood firm. After the first attempt to storm Osovets garrison reported: "On the flanks of the fortress is calm ... the individual structures of the fortress, artillery and garrison quite preserved the defensive capacity, excellent mood of spirit of the garrison".

Realizing that Osovets could not be handled so quickly, the Germans took it under siege. But it was unacceptable to keep significant forces under the fortress indefinitely. By August the German command ordered to take Osovets at any cost. For this purpose they used the most cruel weapon of that war: poisonous gases.

Usually after a gas attack the number of able-bodied soldiers was counted in units. The Germans buried the Russian garrison in advance. Special teams were even assigned to remove and bury the bodies of the defenders.

But then something unthinkable happened. Two Russian companies of the Zemlyansky infantry regiment, having lost up to 50% of their soldiers poisoned, deployed on both sides of the railroad and began the offensive. Another company, having met the German units, with a shout of "hurrah" rushed to the bayonets.

This "dead men's attack," as an eyewitness to the battle recounted, so stunned the Germans that they did not accept the fight and turned to flight. Many enemies died on the wire fences from the fire of the fortress artillery. It seemed to the Germans that it was the Russian dead who rose from the trenches to go to the last battle.

Osovets survived, but there was no sense to keep the defense. So, on August 18 began the evacuation of troops from the fortress. The Germans could not even prevent the Russians from leaving. Artillery and valuable property was taken out. Everything that could not be taken out was destroyed by sappers.

The commandant of Osovets, General Nikolai Brzhozovsky, was leaving with the last detachment and personally turned the fuse handle, leaving only ruins and death behind him.
