By the summer of 1945, three atomic bombs were produced: plutonium "Thingy" for testing, uranium "Baby" and plutonium "Fat Man". The latter two were intended to intimidate Japan and demonstrate the growing power of the United States to the Soviet Union.

The bombing of Hiroshima was a brutal demonstration of American power and an attempt to justify the huge financial investment in the nuclear program.
