At that time, twenty-year-old Lev Koshkin, who had already managed to work as a concrete worker and turner, enrolled in the evening department of the Bauman Moscow Technical University.

After graduation he was sent to the Ulyanovsk Machine-Building Plant, one of the oldest cartridge factories in the country. There the young engineer faced a fundamental contradiction: attempts to automate production using conventional machine tools proved to be economically untenable. Koshkin asked himself a question that later changed everything: can all technology be automated?

He looked for the answer in an unexpected place - in the writings of Karl Marx. It was his dialectical analysis of the development of technology that led him to the idea of rotary automatons - machines in which tools move continuously with the objects being worked on. In 1938, he built the first such machine for inserting primers into cartridge cases. It was twice as productive and many times more compact than its German counterparts.

Despite the skepticism of his colleagues and the open resistance of specialists, the idea was supported by the Commissar of Armaments D.F. Ustinov.
