At dawn on August 9, 1945 the Soviet armies began an offensive. Distracting blows were made by Far Eastern fronts from the side of Primorye and Khabarovsk territory, the main forces attacked from the side of Transbaikalia. At the same time a landing on South Sakhalin and the Kurils was planned.
