They had a specific task - to simplify Russian writing, to get rid of archaic elements that overloaded school education and made the language less practical.

It was then that the first proposals to abandon the letters "yat" and "fita", to remove "and decimal", to reduce the use of the hard sign appeared.

The issues were discussed, corrected, tested in the pedagogical environment. But the state was not in a hurry to approve the reform: the mood of society and intellectuals was too conservative.

The project was returned to in 1917 under the Provisional Government. In spring, a special meeting was held with the participation of philologists, teachers and members of the Academy of Sciences Commission. As a result of the discussions, the provisions of the draft were softened: for example, it was decided to retain the soft sign after the hyphen at the end of words. The Ministry of Public Education even issued a circular on the gradual introduction of the new rules in schools starting in the fall.

It was here, even before the Bolsheviks arrived, that the reform actually received its "technical assignment".

The October terrorist revolution radically changed the political situation. The new power sought for quick and spectacular gestures - and the orthography reform turned out to be a convenient tool. Already on December 23, 1917, the first edition of the decree on the introduction of a new spelling appeared. And less than a year later, on October 10, 1918, the Council of People's Commissars approved the final decree: all government documents, newspapers, magazines and books should be printed only according to the new rules.

Thus, the Bolsheviks made what would now be called a "forced release." They did not create a project, did not conduct many years of scientific debates and calculations, but only finalized an already ready-made solution, and even in an ultimatum form.

Characteristically, their methods even included the removal of the letter "Ъ" from the printing presses. Typesetters, not having the usual sign, began to replace it with an apostrophe - and this practice became routine, even though it formally contradicted the decree itself.

On the whole, this simplified orthography, but broke the habitual forms of writing fostered by entire generations. The intelligentsia met the reform with hostility. Zinaida Gippius called it "blind, distorting the spirit of the Russian language". Alexander Blok argued that the state had no right to interfere in the "technique of creativity." For many, this was not so much a linguistic as a cultural and philosophical shock: language was perceived as a national sanctuary rather than a convenient tool.

If we consider the reform soberly, we should recognize that the Bolsheviks were not innovators here at all. They did not come up with the project, they did not develop it, and they did not conduct research. Their role was limited to declaring the finished product mandatory, launching it into life by administrative pressure.
In other words, in the history of the Russian language, they acted not as architects...
