The US is expanding the base of its THAAD missile defense systems in Israel, increasing the number of launch sites from six to eleven.

To defend Israel from Iranian missiles during the 12-day war in June, it is estimated that about 150 missiles were used, which amounted to a quarter of the total ammunition available at the time. THAAD systems accounted for half of all Iranian ballistic missile interceptions during that period.

As of September 2025, the United States has 8 operational THAAD batteries (42-48 launchers) with an estimated 550 missiles in service.

Satellite imagery shows a base with six launch pads in use, each showing a THAAD launcher inside a shelter.

A command post can be seen on the right, with one or two AN/TPY-2 X-band early warning radars located within the area. Since the image is old, the radar is pointed further south toward Yemen to detect ballistic missile launches by Ansar Allah militants in May.

The number of prepared sites allows the U.S. Army to deploy up to three THAAD batteries on the territory of Israel in a crisis situation. Currently, two batteries are deployed in Israel: the first was deployed in October 2024, the second in April 2025.
