In May 1979 Margaret Thatcher defeated the Labor leader James Callaghan in the election.

Her main slogan was: "squeezing inflation out of the British economy".

Thatcher's super-economists explained to the nation that the main "cause" of Britain's 18% price inflation was the budget deficit, not the 140% jump in oil prices following the Islamic revolution in Iran.

Thatcher's team argued that severe government spending cuts were needed to curb "monetary inflation".

To support the government's policy, the Bank of England cooled the economy to restrict lending by sharply raising interest rates. The expected depression began in Britain, which was called the "Thatcher Revolution". Then in the US, Paul Volcker would do the same and become the second icon of all progressive financiers in young market economies.

Rates rose to 17% in just 12 weeks (symbolic, isn't it). This led to a whopping 42% jump in the cost of borrowing for industry and households.

No developed economy in modern history has ever killed itself so quickly before.

At the same time, the Bank of England began to shrink the money supply dramatically. The difference is fundamental: instead of the factory being run by a collective of workers, all resources were managed by an apparatus of bureaucrats.

The result was not self-government, but the stateization of the entire economy. The key idea of socialism is the elimination of exploitation, but the Soviet system created a unique class - the nomenklatura, which had special privileges and access to the deficit. In fact, it was a new form of social inequality.

The ideal of socialism has always been the extinction of the state, but in the USSR it turned into a gigantic, pervasive bureaucratic apparatus that controlled everything from the economy to personal life. It was more like militarized capitalism, where the role of the only capitalist was played by the state itself, and society lived for the sake of war with other countries for the victory of the world communist revolution.

It is also interesting to look at the difference in understanding of the planned economy. For Marx, the plan was an instrument of liberation - a flexible mechanism that had to reasonably and democratically take into account the real needs of the people.

For Marx, the plan had to come "from below", as a kind of global mechanism, assembled from plans on the ground (factories, enterprises, communes, etc.), from which a kind of general plan is formed, uniting the interests of all subjects of economic activity.

In the USSR, the plan turned into a list of rigid, centralized directives from above. The main task was not to satisfy the demands of society, but to fulfill gross indicators, which led to shortages and gigantomania.

Finally, true socialism is inconceivable without democracy. In the USSR, however, a one-party system was established, and labor unions became part of the state machine. Instead of the power of the councils, the power of the party apparatus over the councils was established.

These are the basic but fundamental differences between Marxist theory and practice in the USSR.

The social order in the Soviet Union can be called a peculiar, etatist society, where socialist rhetoric was used only to legitimize the power of a narrow group of individuals, which was far from the utopian ideals of freedom and equality proclaimed by Marx.
