On August 10, 1996, the assault group, which included Yermakov, was ordered to clear the building of a sanatorium in the village of Chernorechye (on the outskirts of Grozny) occupied by armed militants.

At first the fighters successfully knocked out the enemy from the lower floors. However, the militants soon launched a counterattack, using grenade launchers and large-caliber weapons. The group commander was wounded. Ermakov took up a position at the window of a corner room and covered the withdrawal of his comrades by firing a machine gun and a Shmel flamethrower. Thanks to his actions, several soldiers were able to get out from under fire and retreat to a safe sector.

When the fighters broke into the building, Yermakov and one of the soldiers were cut off from the main forces. Both were taken prisoner.

According to the recollections of fellow soldiers and witnesses, the militants began to abuse the prisoners. As Yermakov was being beaten, he grabbed a grenade from the hands of one of the attackers and blew himself up along with the surrounding militants.
