1) 27 июня 1997 года в Москве при посредничестве ООН было подписано окончательное мирное соглашение между правительством РТ и Объединенной таджикской оппозицией.

По результатам прошедших в 1999 году выборов президентом стал Эмомали Рахмон. В ходе гражданской войны погибли более 60 тысяч человек, около 40 тысяч человек пропали без вести. Еще примерно 100 тысяч бежали в соседний Афганистан. От 200 до 250 тысяч человек были вынуждены покинуть Таджикистан и переселиться в страны СНГ (в основном в Россию), и это коснулось не только русского населения, также немцев, евреев и украинцев. По результатам президентских выборов остался сторонник светского правления страны Эмомали Рахмон (тогда еще Рахмонов), а оппозиция получила места в парламенте, административные должности, директорские посты на различных крупных промышленных предприятиях, а рядовые бойцы сил оппозиции вошли в состав армии и других силовых ведомств.
